About Baccarat: Baccarat Crystal (named after a small town in the French region of Lorraine) began in 1764 when King Louis XV granted a charter to the Bishop of Metz to establish a glass factory. Baccarat’s first items were mirrors and windowpanes. After the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, the company shifted from glass to superior full lead crystal. Baccarat introduced its famed Harcourt patter, innovated balloon glasses (the origin of gourmet wine glasses), and began creating items featuring exceptional crystal combined with unparalleled artistry. In 1855, Baccarat received a gold medal at a national exhibition in Paris, and as a result, King Louis XVIII placed a royal commission. Baccarat crystal has won numerous prestigious awards in the last 200 years, including the Medaille d’Or at the 1867 and 1878 World’s Fairs. In 1907, Baccarat became the first factory to manufacture crystal perfume bottles. In 1916, George Chevalier, a promising young artist, joined Baccarat. In 1964, Baccarat celebrated its bicentenary with a retrospective at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.
